Commercial Artichoke Growing
Big Heart Seed has partnered with many commercial producers throughout its existence. With artichokes being in demand worldwide, many growers from various countries in Europe, Central and South America continue to travel to observe the Hybrid Trial plots in Brawley, California. Each March, growers visit the site to select varieties to grow their own screening and trials. With varying growing climates globally, not all varieties work for all growers and regions. Through these efforts Big Heart Seed continues to produce seed for domestic partners and work in cooperation with hopes of finding new material to bring to market. There are many different products being tested and constantly developed with the hopes of making beautiful, edible varieties.
With the bulk of the market artichokes in the United States being grown and controlled by just a few companies, the selection of varieties available to the consumer is limited. In the current developing organic and small home growers coming to the artichoke world, Big Heart Seed feels it has contributions in shape, color, and flavor for these new growers.
